Sony FX5 Full-Frame Cinema Line Camera Body

The Sony FX5 is a compact and modular full-frame Cinema Line camera designed for professional filmmaking, documentaries, commercial productions and multi-camera workflows. Its new 16.6-megapixel sensor, BIONZ XR2 processor and 5K Open Gate recording provide high image quality and greater flexibility during post-production.
The camera body supports internal RAW recording, more than 15 stops of dynamic range, high-frame-rate video and advanced autofocus. Despite its compact dimensions, it can be integrated into professional Cinema Line production environments.

5K Open Gate recording

The 5K Open Gate mode uses a larger area of the full-frame sensor, retaining more image information for reframing during post-production. Horizontal, vertical and alternative aspect-ratio versions can be created more easily from the same recording.

This is particularly useful for commercials, social media content and productions intended for several distribution platforms. Open Gate recording also provides greater flexibility when working with anamorphic lenses.

Internal RAW recording

The Sony FX5 supports internal RAW recording in three professional codecs. High-quality files with extensive colour information can therefore be recorded without an external recorder.

Internal recording enables smaller and lighter camera configurations with fewer cables and accessories. This is useful for handheld, gimbal-based and small-crew productions.

16.6-megapixel full-frame sensor

The new 16.6-megapixel full-frame sensor works together with the BIONZ XR2 processor to provide more than 15 stops of dynamic range. Highlight and shadow information can be retained in high-contrast scenes for greater flexibility during colour grading.

Triple Base ISO performance

Triple Base ISO and dual-gain technology provide optimised sensitivity settings for different lighting conditions. The Sony FX5 can be used in bright daylight, controlled studio environments and challenging low-light situations.

5K 60p and 4K 120p recording

The Sony FX5 supports recording at up to 5K 60p and 4K 120p. High-frame-rate recording makes it possible to capture fast movement in detail and create smooth slow-motion sequences.

A New Place in the Cinema Line

The FX5 is a wholly new entry into Sony's ever-expanding Cinema Line. It fits neatly in between the compact FX3-with which the FX5 shares a form factor-and the more seriously equipped FX6. Each one has its own set of features and tools that make it better suited to different types of video production. The biggest change to note is that the FX5 has moved to a next-gen sensor technology with its 16.6MP 5K fully stacked CMOS compared to the 12MP BSI CMOS of the FX3 and FX6. Here's a closer look at how the FX3 and FX6 are positioned in relation to the FX5.

The FX3 was the ultimate handheld compact cinema camera from Sony when it first launched, and its performance remains among the best in the industry. Where the FX3 differs from the FX5 is that it borrows a lot from the Alpha series; the menu and controls are easier for users who also use mirrorless cameras like an a7R VI. Plus, the FX3 has a physical shutter and proper still image capture (including raw) for dual-purpose use.

Looking at the FX6, the FX5 is much closer in menu, features, and operation than the FX3. However, the FX6 still maintains many features expected of a traditional production cinema camera, including pro-quality connections (e.g., SDI), more physical controls, a built-in electronic ND filter (versus the stabilization of the FX5), and compatibility with Sony's larger BP-U series battery packs.
